Daily Post: To Change, or Not to Change…

Today’s Daily Prompt causes us to consider how we change:

You need to make a major change in your life. Do you make it all at once, cold turkey style, or incrementally?

For me, it depends on the type of change.

  • I had a fondness for the drink in college; I thought it helped me get through some most difficult and unpleasant experiences. I stopped cold turkey–not so much for health or moral reasons, but for financial ones. Poor college students should not develop a taste for near-top-shelf alcohol…
  • I enjoyed smoking. As a teen I started lightly and maintained it as a habit. I stopped when I got pregnant and then the stresses of a difficult marriage, the sudden death of my dad, and a premature baby helped me pick it up again. I had stopped again years later, and then started up during another time of stress. Again, my pocket was a great motivator, since a pack of my enjoyed brand was between $7-9 (I liked a non-US brand). Plus realizing that smoking was doing nothing positive for my health also helped the cold turkey process.
  • Like a majority of living folks, I enjoy food. sometimes a bit too much. I have tried any number of weird fads and so on to lose weight, so that has been an incremental journey. And one that would take me much longer than this daily prompt to chronicle…

Cold turkey is me. Well, fitness, that isn’t a quick fix. But making the decision and clearing out the cupboards – that can happen quickly.

Very true, Gretchen; it’s the exercise that kills me…hate it, can’t get past that. I walk for exercise, but my M.D. told me to lighten up on that because I have issues with both Achilles tendons. Am considering weightlifting or something…Sigh.

Swimming? Burns a lot of calories.

Ah, yes…I lobbied for a backyard pool since we don’t live near a public one and my work hours preclude me from going before or after. If I did that, I’d never be home 🙂
