Write at the Merge, Week 10: Authority Figure

Happy birthday, Dr. Seuss! So fabulous that the good people over at Write at the Merge are offering prompts in honor of your day. Here is my quick bit of fiction which I call “Authority Figure:”

Stephan and Gorge did their best not to laugh at the smallish, well, man, who stood before them, arms firmly crossed. In fact it was no laughing matter, him standing there, blocking the path of their axes and chainsaws as he blathered on about nature and whatnot. Stephan and Gorge had been doing this job for years and had never run across anything like him before; sure, there had been those villagers along the Belém-Brasília highway years back but nothing like this. They found themselves engaged in an awkward dance; as Stephan and Gorge attempted to bob to one side in order to keep working, he weaved to the right to block them, saying I am the Lorax. I speak for the trees. I speak for the trees for the trees have no tongues.

  1. Somebody sure needs to speak for them! I’ve actually never read “The Lorax” but the loving treatments going around this week make me think perhaps I should check it out.

    1. Oh, yes, Annabelle–it is a wonderful story! And the most recent movie rendition is not too bad either, in my opinion. I think Danny DeVito does a good job voicing the Lorax. And I love the animation 🙂
