Prompts for the Promptless: Worship

“Sir?”

“Yes, child?”

“Why do you sit like that?”

“Like what, child?”

“Like that—so still, eyes closed, a smile on your face.”

“How would you have me sit?”

“Well, I dunno; I guess if I were as large as you, I would do something.”

“Like what?”

“I dunno. Maybe scare a few people once in a while. Laugh out loud. Stand up and stretch. Pick someone up and put them on your shoulder and then walk around.”

“Why would I do that?”

“To show how powerful you are. You are Buddha, right?”

“Yes, I am Buddha.”

“Well, then! You should do something, anything! People come from all over the world to visit Bodhgaya just to see you.”

“And by doing something, as you put it; what purpose would that serve?”

[A sound of exasperation] “Well, it would give them a reason to worship you.”

“Take a moment and look down and to your right; yes…forward a bit. What do you see?”

[A sound of slight gagging and discomfort] “Um, I guess those are people worshiping and meditating.”

“So it would appear. That is what happens when Buddha does what Buddha is supposed to do.”
