Camp NNWM, Day 20: Miscount…

Now, I’ve never been one for math, but I thought I had a good plan for how to organize myself for camping: I have a primary document that includes the full narrative of the novella and I have individual documents for each day. Typically I hand-write for a while each day until I reach a point where I feel I need to stop and type it into the full narrative. I also copy/paste that same text into a daily document. By having the daily documents I can go back and see how much I’ve written for each individual day. Making sense so far?

Caveat: there are occasions where I don’t just type in what I’ve hand-written for that day; sometimes as I’m typing Madame Muse shows up and more gets added or a scene gets changed. There are times even when I end up typing a whole additional new section for the day, which is oh-so-tasty.

However, I just realized today when I added my individual daily bits I am 668 words short of my full narrative document count. When I did the math today using a calculator, of course, I came up with 15,122 for my total word count. Word, on the other hand, says I have 15, 790.

I must admit that I did not take the time to go back through all 20 individual days’ documents (I went from 1st to 4th April, which seemed correct; to be sure, I’d probably have to compare each individual day to the full document, like a side-by-side comparison. Is it really necessary? I think not…) to see if the totals I wrote down were correct, so it is possible that I messed up somewhere. Since I copy/paste from the full-narrative document into each day’s document, it is possible that somewhere along the line I didn’t copy all of the text I should have for that day. However, having scanned the full narrative and finding no duplicated paragraphs or anything, I am pleased to report that I have reached 90% of my intended total with 11 days to go.

So based on all that, here’s what the Camp NaNo gnomes say about today. Yeah, it looks like I broke out and wrote like a fiend today but actually my count is 851 words. Still, none too shabby.
