Have you ever gone to a class and realized after a few moments that what you were being taught was something you already knew, but that was being presented in a new way? That happened
sort of to me last night. My colleague at our local library’s learning center invited the writer Alexandra Sokolov to speak on script writing. Now before you go getting all excited and start asking me questions like, “How could you even consider writing a screenplay or script when you haven’t even finished writing your novel yet?” Or, “And besides, you aren’t writing a proper novel anyway–it’s just a novella so what’s your deal?”
Just hush and lemme finish.
She talked about the structure of a movie and gave us a layout of how the acts and scenes typically go. As she was going through the process from beginning to end, I could see how the flow of my ehem, novella matched what she was saying. It totally made sense and I am anxious to get finished so I can go back and edit. I’m thinking about going through each page to break it down and see if I’ve got all the key elements: multiple acts, mid-act and end-act turning points, and identification of the issues in a reasonable time to the start of the story.
It was encouraging to “get it” and to know I’m on the right track with my ebbs and flows. By my count I banged out 461 words, but the Camp Gnomes sliced four off and left me with 457. I’ll take it. With just shy of 1700 words remaining to reach my new goal, I look forward to sharing a winner’s badge soon!
Happy writing, fellow campers!
