VisDare #32: Why Choose?

“I don’t know, Doctor.”

He pursed his lips, annoyed at how much time it was taking her to decide. “Ms. McGraw, the decision is very simple. You may choose between style 3, 12, or 22. Which would you like?”

“But why must I choose any of them? What’s wrong with the way I am?”

“No one said there was anything wrong; it’s just that…well…no one looks the way you do anymore.” He comment was met with silence, into which he cleared his throat. “So, which one will it be, Ms. McGraw?”

“I don’t think I want any of them, Doctor.”

He hated when they went through these machinations. “In time, Ms. McGraw, you will.”

My 114-word ode to Rod Serling for VisDare this week. The photo immediately made me think of this “Twilight Zone” episode.

  1. One of my favorites: Number 12 Looks Just Like You.
I was never the pretty girl. Though I always wished I could wave a magic wand and make myself pretty, I would have balked at surgery to do so and have never had anything but very minor cosmetic surgery to remove a large mole. I also had work done on my teeth.

    1. Yes–I admire the girl for wanting to be herself. Always wondered what those women did back then to have such tiny waists! I don’t come from small people so I can’t imagine.
We moved from New Jersey to Southern California, the land of Hollywood and “beauty” but I have not yet succumbed to the sheer madness of it all. I too have had some minor improvements (someday I’ll write a post about them, I’m sure). 😀
Thanks for popping in and thanks for following!!

  2. The Twilight Zone is my favorite show, the original ones. I’ve watched every episode over and over. I use it as inspiration for my writing. This also makes me think of “Eye of the Beholder” episode. If you haven’t seen it, you must. One of the best.

    1. Oh, yes! I have some TZ on VHS and watch them every holiday when they are on television. And “Eye of the Beholder” is also excellent. Very suspenseful. Rod Serling was a genius. “Night Gallery” is another fav 😉

          1. It was a good series that showed up around the same time as TZ. I noticed online that the boxed set seems to have all three seasons (I might have to grab it myself).

    1. Hi David and thanks for popping in! I tend to write for VisDare with a back story in mind…love to leave folks considering what might have happened before the present scene or what comes next. Hence “machinations.” 😀

  3. I only remember the little troll on the airplane wing episode but did watch the show weekly. I can imagine the premise of this show. Good for Mrs. McGraw for choosing to remain herself! Eerie and well done!
