Sara-Jane turned from the window and there on the landing was her older sister, Suzannah. She hadn’t seen Suz since her ill-fated wedding; Sara-Jane was the youngest of five girls and Suz was second above her. She looked older than ever with heavily-lidded eyes. She reminded Sara-Jane of Clyde, their father’s workhorse. As she looked at Suz, she could see Cyde in her mind’s eye; he was loyal and smart and she often dreamed of riding him away from the farm to a life of excitement and happiness. From the look on Suz’s face, things were as they’d always been.
