The Starving Activist is the sometimes-home for words. AR Neal (that’s me) finds them, cultivates them, and leaves them here. Enjoy.

Haboob Manifesto, Pt. 3.3: Nia

Today represents the fifth day of Kwanzaa and includes the principle of Nia, or purpose.

What is your purpose?

I was meditating on that question today as Christopher and I celebrate our wedding anniversary. We have been married since 2004 and have been together since 2000. I consider my purpose as wife and partner, and whether I have lived up to the Nia principle of service. My conclusion? Eh, sometimes yes, sometimes not so much. We all fall short in some areas, I suppose.

Nia encompasses the concept of restoring our families and communities to traditional levels of greatness. Such action involves carrying ourselves appropriately in all situations. It encourages respect-giving. It encourages us to expect respect from others, in fact to seek it.

I am striving to greatness as I work out my purpose, but have a long way to go...
