The Starving Activist is the sometimes-home for words. AR Neal (that’s me) finds them, cultivates them, and leaves them here. Enjoy.

Daily Prompt: Strange, But True

The Daily Post pixies have become quite demanding these days:

Write the blurb for the book jacket of the book you’d write, if only you had the time and inclination.

I am a skilled flash fiction writer but blurbs? I'm working on it. I've actually written two book jacket blurbs. If you've been around the Cave for any length of time, you've probably seen at least one of them.

Adventures in Cargo City

I wrote this for the April 2013 Camp NaNoWriMo. If you are not in the mood to click through, here is the alleged blurb as demanded by the pixies at the Daily Prompt:

Victoria and Veronica live with their aunt and uncle in a fourth-floor walk-up located on the West Side of Cargo City. After a terrible storm blows in, the sisters find themselves trying to survive after a harrowing encounter that begins with their separation from their uncle. Their ordeal takes them into the urban center after they find a friend; once there they find so much more.

Set in a fictional town located in the rust belt of the United States, “Adventures in Cargo City” is a story that puts together a number of familiar elements about big city life in America: poverty, friendship, discord, family, struggle, and hope.

From Reality's Edge Volume One

This book is available to read as a serialized collection of short stories; if you click the link above, you may be asked to sign in or to create a JukePop account for free. It will allow you to save books to your bookshelf and to vote up the chapters you like (this author would certainly appreciate that!). If you are not interested by this compelling plea, here is the so-called blurb the Daily Post pixies requested:

"Reality's Edge" is the first volume of a compilation of stories that take readers on a journey through time and space. Visit with a cast of characters: the woman whose new lover is a synthetic human who brings more to their relationship than she bargained for; the car that dreams of being more; or the man who stands on the corner with a "Jesus Saves" sign. Visit new worlds, or old ones. It's all here.

And there you have it!
